In effect, Hine's photographs became the face of the National Child Labor Committee, and are among the earliest examples of documentary photography in America. Lewis Hine was an influential photo journalist in the years leading up to the First World War.
Lewis Hine and the National Child Labor Committee. Lewis Hine became an investigative photojournalist for the National Child Labor Committee in the early 1900s. Hine took many pictures of workers under the age of 16 in the field. His pictures are the ones that appear in many books on the history of child labor.
Housed in the United States Library of Congress under the National Child Labor Committee Collection, are moving and sad images of child labor from the early 1900s. These photos, many of them of Irish children, were taken by Lewis Wickes Hine, a sociologist and photographer who used his art to eventually change child labor law.
Invitations were extended to child labor reform advocates and interested people around the nation inviting them to a meeting at Carnegie Hall in New York City on April 15, 1904.
