1. Prepare your workstation with your tools and equipment. Put on rubber gloves, eye protection, and an apron. Carefully pre-measure the ingredients. The solid oils into the pan, the liquid oils into a jug, the shea butter in a small saucepan or microwaveable dish, the water into a heat-proof jug, and the lye in another container.
2. In an airy place, outdoors is best, pour the lye crystals into the distilled water and stir well. There will be a lot of heat and steam so be careful. Try not to breathe it in. Leave outside in a safe place, or in a shallow basin of water to cool.
3. Melt the solid oils in a stainless steel pan on very low heat. When melted, remove from the heat and set on a potholder. Stir the liquid oils together in the jug and pour into the pan of melted oils. Castor oil is pretty sticky and it's easier to pour when mixed with a lighter oil.
4. Now it's time to make the face soap. You begin by pouring the lye solution into the pan of oils. I recommend pouring the liquid through a sieve to catch any potential undissolved lye.

1. Using a digital scale, measure out the lye and water in separate glass containers. Combine them by adding the lye to the water. (Remember: snow floats on the lake.). Stir until the lye dissolves. The temperature will shoot up. Place this in a safe place to cool.
2. While the lye solution is cooling, measure out the oils and butters and combine them in a large stainless pot. Melt them over low heat and heat them up to 130-140 degrees. Set them aside to cool.
3. After 2 hours, check the temperature of both solutions. They should be around 110 degrees. (A range of 100-120 is fine.). If not, allow them to cool longer.
4. Prepare your mold and measure out any fragrance or color you will be adding. (For best blending of colors, mix some color into a few drops of melted oils.). If using sodium lactate, add it to the lye water at this time.

1. Prepare your workstation with your tools and equipment. Put on rubber gloves, eye protection, and an apron. Carefully pre-measure the ingredients. The solid oils into the pan, the liquid oils into a jug, the water into another heat-proof jug, and the lye in another container.
2. Prepare your recycled soap mold. Rinse out an empty drinks carton and let it dry upside down. When fully dry, cut out the side that the pouring spout is on. A cutting blade is better for this than scissors. Use a piece of the cut-out material to block the open end of the carton. This helps to create a flat surface on that side of the mold, rather than a funky shape from the shape of what was the top of the carton.
3. Next, dissolve the lye (Sodium hydroxide) crystals in water. In an airy place, outdoors is best, pour the lye crystals into the water and stir well. There will be a lot of heat and steam so be careful. Try not to breathe it in. Leave outside in a safe place, or in a shallow basin of water to cool.
4. Melt the solid oils in a stainless steel pan on very low heat. When melted, remove from the heat and set on a potholder. Pour in the liquid oils. If you have the olive and castor oils in the same container, stir them together first before pouring into the pan. Castor oil is pretty sticky and it's easier to pour when mixed with a lighter oil.

1. Fill a 2-liter container with water (round up to 10.9 if needed). Place container in the sink.
2. Measure lye into a glass container. Sprinkle ⅓ of the lye flakes or beads into the water jug that is sitting in your sink, stir it a few times and step back from the fumes.
3. Wait 20-30 seconds to make sure it is dissolved and add the next third of the mixture. Stir, wait, and step back. Continue until all the lye is incorporated into the water. The water will begin to heat up. Stir well, ensure no chunks form. Now set it and forget it. Leave the lye alone and walk away, knowing it’s safe in the sink and cannot tip over.
4. Melt palm oil in a glass container. Add olive oil and melted coconut oil to it.

1. I like to start off by making sure my essential oils are weighed out and combined in a glass container. As it can take some time to get these measurements right, it’s easier to do it now so you just have to tip it in later when it counts. Then, weigh out your sodium hydroxide/lye crystals and your water in separate containers. I like to use a glass jug for the water. When ready, pour the crystals into the water and stir with a stainless steel spoon. This will begin the chemical reaction, and the lye water rapidly increases in temperature. Avoid inhaling any fumes that release. Turn your head and lean away from the lye solution. Now, place the jug aside to cool, preferably somewhere with good ventilation and move on.
2. Weigh out the coconut oil and the shea butter. Then, melt together. You can use a water bath, although a series of 30-second bursts in the microwave works well for me. Then weigh the olive, avocado and castor oils and add them to the melted coconut oil and shea butter.
3. Now that we’re almost ready to mix, check the temperature of the oils and the lye water and compare them. We want them between 90F and 120F.Once you’re satisfied that both fall within this range, pour your lye water into the oils and blend with a stick blender until you reach trace. Not quite sure what trace is? Take a look at our basic cold process soap recipe for a more in-depth description of trace.
4. Now that we’re at trace, go ahead and add the activated charcoal and essential oils (in that order), mixing thoroughly after.

1. Measure out the lye and the water in separate, non-reactive containers, using a digital scale. Combine the lye and the water and stir until dissolved. The lye solution will heat up as the result of a chemical reaction. Be careful of fumes, heat, and the corrosive solution. Set the cup aside to cool in a very safe place.
2. Measure out the oils in separate containers and place them in a pot. Add 1 teaspoon of the lemon zest. Melt over medium low heat until fully melted and about 130-140 degrees. Remove from the heat and set aside to cool.
3. Check the temperature of both solutions after an hour or so. Before proceeding, they should be around 90-100 degrees. It is best if they are within ten degrees of each other. Add the sodium lactate to the cooled lye water. Before blending, have your soap mold, last teaspoon of lemon zest, and fragrance ready. Put on gloves and googles.
4. Pour the lye solution into the melted oils and blend with a stick blender until you reach trace. Trace is reached when the soap forms a batter and the stick blender leaves a trail when dragged across the top of the pot. Once trace is reached, add the fragrance and remaining lemon zest and stir in by hand. Immediately pour the soap batter into the mold. Place in a turned off oven or other draft-free place and allow to set for 24 hours.

How to make cold process soap?

How to Make Cold Process Soap

  1. Weigh lye a heatproof container. Weigh water in a separate container. ...
  2. Carefully pour the lye into water, stirring gently with a heatproof utensil until the lye has fully dissolved.
  3. While the lye solution is cooling, weigh oils or solid butters. Melt with a double-boiler until up to 100 degrees.
  4. Pour the lye solution into the container of oils. Stir until trace is reached. (Trace refers to the point when the oils and lye solution have emulsified.
  5. Add any extra ingredients-such as natural exfoliants or colorants-stirring to combine.
  6. Carefully, pour melted soap into the mold. (The soap is still caustic at this stage, so keep your safety gear on when handling.)

How do you make homemade soap?

Add the hot oils to the lye and water mixture. Think about whether you need a larger container first, but only use Pyrex or stainless steel. Pour the oils slowly into the lye and water mixture. Stir until the mixture is significantly thicker and the stirring implement leaves light trace marks in the soap batter.

What is the cold process in soap?

The term “cold” in “cold process soap” is actually a bit of a misnomer, because things get quite warm. Soapmakers start by making a lye mixture and allowing the mixture to cool, and then liquefying fats and oils and bringing them to a temperature close to that of the lye.

What is soap making?

Making Soap. Soap making history goes back many thousands years. The most basic supplies for soap making were those taken from animal and nature; many people made soap by mixing animal fats with lye. Today, soap is produce from fats and an alkali.
