In the case of our “max” stable overclock, the CPU voltage was bumped to 1.40v (+0.05v above Intel’s maximum recommended), and our “QPI/Vtt” voltage saw a boost from 1.10v to 1.30v – still well within safe limits. Although 1.40v on the CPU isn’t exactly dangerous, it will be if you don’t have sufficient cooling.

Total. $299.99. Generated by PCPartPicker 2015-03-23 11:54 EDT-0400. Its a $32 difference. It seems, that in general, we recommend overclocked i5's. And if someone is build ready with an unlocked i5 and a $100 AIO liquid cooler, no one recommends a cheaper locked i7 setup. My guess is that the locked i7 would be the way to go.

But there are Core i5 models that are faster than i7, like the Core i5-56600k which is faster than Core i7-6700, the only downside is that the Core i5 has less cache. In a nutshell: Core i7. In reality an 1155 i5 or i7 K is going to be better than a current 1366 i7, and the later 1356 and 2011 SB stuff with its tripple/quad channel ram and more PCIe lanes is probably not going to offer much more in real-world single user situations, i.e. gaming, for some huge prices - mirroring current 1156 vs 1366 performance/price.

Answer (1 of 5): Turbo boost is just a term Intel used to explain in layman’s terms that the processor will shortly clocked into 4.7 GHz for a moment, when there is a chance to do so. Turbo boost doesn’t mean your CPU will be clocked in 4.7 GHz all the time. There are various parameters to consi

It also has same amount of extra logical cores along with the physical cores depending on the generation, whereas the i5 is only restricted to physical cores. Answer (1 of 23): Good question. Essentially, i5 is the same CPU as i7, only that its hyper-threading option is factory-disabled. If the hyper-threading is disabled in the BIOS for an i7 CPU, then it would have the same performance as a comparable i5. So how can Intel i5 …

For the long haul, really either the i5 or the i7 are good processors. The next generation chip from Intel isn't slated until sometime early next year, and even then, it will be the same microarchitecture as the current Haswell processors, so I'd say in either chip (i5 or i7) the laptop will withstand the progress of technology for a good two

Core i3, Core i5, Core i7 — the difference in a nutshell. If you want to boil things down to something plain and simple, then generally speaking, "most" Core i7 CPUs are better than most Core i5 CPUs, which are in turn better than most Core i3 CPUs. Below that, you’ve got fare like the Intel Celeron and Intel Pentium processors.
The process of overclocking the i7-870 was pretty much the same as the i5-750. We first tried to achieve a high overclock using stock voltages, and thanks to the slightly higher multiplier here, we were able to get by with using a lower bus speed (173MHz vs. 155MHz).

If you're like most people, you've probably spent hours scrolling through the endless search results trying to find an overclocking guide or tutorial that covers everything you'll need to know about how to overclock your new Intel Core i7, i5, or i3 processor (CPU).
The most overclockable CPUs will be LGA-1366 chips. We tried overclocking three different CPUs: the Core i7 870, Core i7 860 and Core i5 750. We overclocked using two different coolers: the retail low profile HSF and a Thermalright MUX-120 (the heatsink Intel is sending around to reviewers for high performance testing).
The latest D0 stepping of the Bloomfield Core i7 chip is an extremely nifty overclocker, too. With that in mind, we were extremely anxious to discover whether the microarchitectural changes made with the new Lynnfield Core i5 and Core i7 CPUs would allow the good times to keep on rolling along.
While that offers extreme performance in some cases, a side-effect is greater temperatures. So, it’s imperative that you have a good-quality CPU cooler when overclocking the Core i7-860 or i7-870 (or any of the previously-launched Core i7’s for that matter). The process of overclocking the i7-870 was pretty much the same as the i5-750.
