You do not have to answer questions about your immigration status.
In most cases you can do it by yourself without the aid of an immigration lawyer. But an inaccurate or carelessly answered question can delay an application or result in a denial. Likewise, a poorly prepared application packet can cause unnecessary delays and trigger additional questions.
If you find yourself at an immigration checkpoint while you are driving, never flee from it — it’s a felony. As before, when you are at a checkpoint, you can remain silent, inform the agent that you decline to answer their questions or tell the agent you will only answer questions in the presence of an attorney.
The officer may question you as to the details on these documents, so simply remain calm and answer all questions to the best of your ability. You may be separated from your spouse or family members during the immigration interview. This is entirely within their authority and should be expected.
