As a general rule, travel from your home to your workplace is not allowed as a deduction because it constitutes a “private expense”. There are however specific situations where this rule does not apply. We shed some light below on what does and doesn’t constitute a travel deduction between home and work and between different workplaces.
For example, a photographer going from home to a photo shoot, meeting clients or conducting other business matters away from the home office can deduct all such travel. An employee commuting from home to a regular place of employment cannot claim travel expenses as a tax deduction, however.
To claim expenses for overnight travel, you must have a permanent home elsewhere and your business must require you to stay away from home overnight. If you are entitled to goods and services tax (GST) input tax credits, you must claim your deduction in your income tax return at the GST exclusive amount. Expenses you can't claim
