Frequently Asked Questions

What is an adoption subsidy?

The adoption subsidy is in place to help care for the additional needs of the children, like counseling, medication, therapies, specialists, etc. Most areas will provide state medical coverage for children who are adopted from the foster care system until the age of 18 as part of the adoption subsidy.

Do foster/adopted kids count as income?

I'm in NY. Foster kids get free lunch; subsidy isn't counted. Adopted kids-goes according to income of parent and subsidy is counted as income. The adoption subsidy is not counted as income by the IRS-not sure if that helps.

What happens if I am not approved as a foster carer?

If the child is coming into care, and you are not already approved as a foster carer, the local authority can give temporary approval for 16 weeks while they carry out a fostering assessment, so the child can still be placed with a family member right away.

Should adoption assistance stop once you have adopted a child?

Some people believe strongly that once you have adopted a child, all assistance should be stopped, as you are now the legal parent of the child and should bear full responsibility for their care.
