To put it in simple terms: A traveler’s check is a form of monopoly money the whole world agreed to accept.
With credit cards and debit cards so widespread, traveler’s checks are often dismissed as a relic of the past. But traveler’s checks still have their uses in the modern age of travel — and in some rare cases, they could still be your best option.
A payee receiving a traveler's check would follow its normal procedures for depositing checks into its bank account: usually, endorsement by stamp or signature and listing the check and its amount on the deposit slip.
They can be purchased through some banks, AAA and online. MasterCard has replaced its paper traveler's checks with a prepaid card that works like a debit card, and Visa offers the similar Visa Travel Money Card as a more convenient alternative to its paper checks.
